Meaning of Numbers: The Number 1004
The possible meaning of the number 1004 is partly derived from a unique year in ancient Israel's history and the Biblical (Hebrew) calendar.
The first year on the Hebrew (Biblical) calendar begins late 3761 B.C. (Julian). Year 1004 on this calendar system runs from the middle of September in 2758 B.C. to early September in 2757.
Biblestudy.org's Old Testament timeline places God's creation of man in 3969 B.C. 1004 years after this momentous event in God's plan is 2965 B.C.
Methuselah, the world's oldest man, turned 317 year old in 2965 B.C. His age at the time is slightly less than one third of the astonishing lifespan he will ultimately live! In 2965 Seth, Adam's third son, celebrated his 874th birthday.
Appearances of Number One Thousand Four
Additionally alive 1004 years after Adam's creation are Enos (Seth's son), Cainan (the son of Enos), Mahalaleel (Cainan's son), Jared (Mahalaleel's son) and Lamech (Methuselah's son and father of Noah). This means that seven out of man's first eight generations (Adam died in 3039) were still alive 1004 years after Adam was created!
Entry number 1004 in the Hebrew definition portion of Strong's Concordance is the word bayith. The word is recorded the most in the original language of 2Chronicles (218 times) then 1Kings (194 times) then the prophetic book of Ezekiel (181). Bayith can refer to a house, shelter (for animals or humans), a figurative reference to human bodies, a reference to a household or household affairs, a temple and so on. It is commonly translated as "house" in the King James Bible as seen in the following verse.
And they two made a covenant before the Lord: and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house (bayith, 1Samuel 23:18, KJV).
Number 1004 in Israel's History
1004 B.C. is a rather unique time in the history of ancient Israel. David, after King Saul's death in 1010, is proclaimed king of the tribe of Judah (2Samuel 2:4). The rest of Israel, however, lacks a ruler. After Saul dies, his son Ishbosheth is taken by Abner, his military commander, to the city of Mahanaim (verse 8). Abner then proceeds to convince the tribes of Israel to make Ishbosheth their king.
Part of Abner's campaign to assert Ishbosheth's superority is to have twelve chosen men fight against twelve of David's men that are led by Joab. This mini-war, held in the city of Gibeon, results in Abner's men being killed. Abner himself is then chased back home by those loyal to David and barely escapes with his life (2Samuel 2:12 - 32).
Finally, after a period of roughly five years and six months, Abner convinces all of Israel's tribes (except for Judah) to accept Ishbosheth as their sovereign. The king begins his rule in the last part of 1005 B.C. 1004 B.C. is unique in that it is the only full year where both Ishbosheth and David rule over a part of God's people.
Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David (2Samuel 2:10, HBFV).
In the last part of 1003, however, Ishbosheth is murdered in his bed by two of his military captains (4:1 - 7). David is then made king over a united Israel, a throne he will possess for thirty-three years (5:1 - 5) until his death in 970 B.C.
