The island of Rhodes is located in the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea off the coast of Asia Minor. It is the largest of the Greek islands with a total area of about 541 square miles (1,400 square kilometers).
In ancient times, the island was famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was a giant statue of the Greek sun God Helios constructed in 280 B.C.
The 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia article on Rhodes states that the island is mentioned in 1Maccabees 10:15, 23 and that Jews lived there as early as 140 B.C.
The Apostle Paul, during his fourth missionary journey when he was a prisoner bound for Rome, sailed near the island.
