Bible Meaning: Violent rushing
Strong's Concordance #G978
The name Bithynia means, "violent rushing" (Strong's #G978) while the meaning of Pontus is "the sea" (#G4195).
Bithynia and part of Pontus, located in the northern part of Asia Minor, were combined in 64 B.C. to form a double province. The Bible, unfortunately, does not record any cities within this Roman territory.
Those from Pontus were in Jerusalem at Pentecost in 30 A.D. when God "poured out" his Spirit on 3,100+ people. Bithynia - Pontus is also the place where a Jew named Aquila, the husband of Priscilla, grew up (Acts 18:1 - 2). After the couple converted to Christianity, they became some of Apostle Paul's closest friends and greatly aided his evangelistic efforts.
God, during Paul's second missionary journey, forbids him (along with companions Silas and Timothy) from preaching in or even entering Bithynia - Pontus!
A precious gemstone called Chalcedony is named after the ancient city of Chalcedon in Bithynia where it is thought to have been first discovered.
