1. The principle of "an eye for an eye" means that those in positions to administer justice were to render judgments that were fair and just. The governing authorities were to exact penalties that matched the crime committed.

Those who struck and killed a man, for example, were likewise to be put to death (Exodus 21:12). If a pregnant woman was struck, which caused a miscarriage, the guilty party was punished based on what the woman's husband and a judge determined was fair (verses 22).

An "eye for an eye," it should be noted, does not justify taking personal revenge or carry out vigilantism in order to punish a crime. It is meant to be used as a principle of fairness that is the responsibility of a nation's judges and other authorities who have been given the power to uphold a nation's laws.

2. A person who is given someone else's personal property to store for a period of time is held responsible for returning it to its owner. Unless the property is stolen by a third party, the person safekeeping someone's stuff has to prove they did not steal it or else they are responsible for making restitution.

3. If a man has sex with a consenting female, and that female is unmarried (not betrothed), then the man had to pay the bride price and marry the woman. If the woman's father refuses to allow the marriage, then the man had to compensate the father for the loss of his daughter's virginity and value.

[Is Pre-Marital Sex Wrong?]

4. God's law dictated the penalty for witchcraft or bestiality was death (Exodus 22:18 - 19).

[Who Was the Witch of Endor?]

5. Usury is the charging of interest no matter how small (Exodus 22:25, Leviticus 25:36 - 37). God prohibited the Israelites from charging their fellow citizens interest for non-business expenses but allowed them to do so with "strangers" (non-citizens, Deuteronomy 23:19 - 20).

6. The Apostle Paul was taken before the Jewish Sanhedrin to explain his role in a temple riot (Acts 23). The High Priest, after hearing Paul declare he had a clean conscience, commanded those near him to slap his face. The apostle, who was unaware who was the High Priest that year, verbally chastised him for ordering such an act.

Paul apologize for his words after being informed that it was the acting High Priest who ordered the slap. The principle he based his apology on is in Exodus 22:28 where it states to not speak evil of the ruler of the people.

7. The principle delineated in Exodus 23 is known as a land Sabbath (year of release or Sabbatical year). The Israelites were allowed to plant crops for six years in a row. The seventh year, however, they were commanded to let their land lie fallow and rest. No crops were to be planted. Vineyards and olive trees were also to be left unattended.

[What Is a Sabbatical Year?]

This rest was meant to give the land time to rejuvenate itself and not lose all of its natural minerals and nutrients that made growing possible.

8. God promised he would send hornets, a large species of wasp, to chase away Israel's enemies (Exodus 23:28).

9. The Israelites agreed to the requirements of the Old Covenant.

And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do (Exodus 24:3).

[Covenants in the Bible]

10. Moses sprinkled the Israelites with blood after they agreed to the Old Covenant (Exodus 24:6 - 8). After this sprinkling Aaron, Aaron's sons and seventy Israelite elders went with Moses up Sinai to have a covenant meal with God (verses 9 - 11).

The above events foreshadowed Jesus' last Passover with his disciples. It was during this observance that the Lord declared it would be his blood that would make the New Covenant possible (Matthew 26:27 - 28).

11. Sapphire was one of the many stones God used to beautify Lucifer upon his creation (Ezekiel 28:13). The paved work seen by Israel's elders under God's feet looked like sapphires.

[Precious Gemstones in Scripture!]

And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness (Exodus 24:10).

12. Moses, in order to receive the commandments in stone, went with his assistant Joshua up Mount Sinai and waited six full days (Exodus 24:13 - 16). On the seventh day he alone ascended further into a cloud that represented God's presence.

[Where Is Mount Sinai Located?]

Moses, starting on the seventh day, stayed on Sinai for 40 days and nights (verse 18). This equals 46 days total on the mount.

13. The Bible records the Ark of the Covenant was 2 1/2 cubits long, 1 1/2 cubits wide and 1 1/2 cubits high (Exodus 25:10, 37:1).

If we assume a cubit was, conservatively, 18 inches (.46 meters) long, then the Ark of the Covenant was 3.75 feet (1.14 meters) long and 2.25 feet (.69 meters) high and wide. If we assume 20 inches per cubit, then the Ark was roughly 4.2 feet (1.27 meters) long by 2.5 feet (.76 meters) high and wide.

14. We learn in the New Testament that the earthly Ark of the Covenant was patterned after the one that existed in heaven!

[Picture of the Ark of the Covenant]

Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount (Exodus 8:5).

15. The earthly or physical Ark of the Covenant was almost certainly disassembled and its precious metals melted and reused by the Babylonians (2Kings 20:17, 24:13). The spiritual Ark of the Covenant in God's heavenly temple, however, still exists per the book of Revelation (Revelation 11:19).

16. Cherubim are the first class of angels mentioning in Scripture, as they were the ones who protected the tree of life after man sinned in Eden (Genesis 3:24).

[Cherubim versus Archangels]

Ezekiel's famous "wheel within a wheel" vision had four cherubim in it (Ezekiel 28). Each of these angels had four faces that were the face of a man, lion, ox and eagle (Ezekiel 1, 10).

Lucifer, before his turned himself into Satan the devil, was a cherub (Ezekiel 28:14 - 15).

17. Acacia trees were common in the Sinai and surrounding regions. The writings of fourth century theologian Jerome, as well as the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia, reveals why the wood from this tree was so desirable.

"The wood is hard, tough, smooth, and without knots, and extremely beautiful . . ." (Dictionary of the Holy Bible).

"A hard and durable but light wood: at first yellowish, but gradually turning very dark, like ebony . . . It is a large, spreading, thorny tree with many branches, found in Africa and Arabia" (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia article on Shittim).

18. The veil in Exodus 26 was used to divide the area where the Ark of the Covenant was kept separate from the rest of the tabernacle in the wilderness.

[Does the Ark Still Exist?]

And thou shalt hang up the veil under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the veil shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy (Exodus 26:33).

19. The Israelites were to provide high quality olive oil to supply the seven lamps in the tabernacle area outside of the Holy of Holies (Exodus 25:37). The lamps were to be maintained so that they were constantly burning before the Lord (27:20).

20. A span is the width of a spread out human hand from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the pinky finger. A span was therefore roughly 9 inches (22.8 centimeters) long.

21. The special breastplate of gems worn by the High Priest (called the "breastplate of judgment" in Exodus 28:15) had each of its precious stones engraved with the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel (Exodus 28:21).

The main purpose of the High Priest's breastplate was to be a memorial (reminder) before the Eternal. It was meant to remind the priest that he represented all the people, as mediator and intercessor, before the Lord (Exodus 28:29, 39:7).

[Picture of High Priest's Breastplate]

22. Urim (Strong's Concordance #H224) means "lights" and Thummim (Strong's #H8550) means "perfections" or "emblem of truth."

The Urim and Thummim were stored in a pouch, sewn into the breastplate, which was placed directly over the priest's heart. They were put in this location to be a memorial before the Lord (Exodus 28:29).

The Urim and Thummim were one of the main ways God conveyed his will to Israel. Scripture is silent, however, regarding what these two objects looked like, who made them and so on.

23. Aaron and his sons were first ceremonially washed (Exodus 29:4). Moses then clothed Aaron with the High Priest's special clothes and anointed him with oil (verse 7). Aaron's sons were then dressed in their special priestly tunics.

Aaron and his sons then laid hands on a bullock which was then sacrificed as a sin offering (Exodus 29:10 - 14). A ram was also sacrificed and used as a burnt offering to God (verses 15 - 18).

[What Is Laying on of Hands?]

A second ram was additionally killed and its blood placed on the right ears, right thumbs, and right big toes of Aaron and his sons, signifying that they were cleansed and dedicated to God. The rest of the ram's blood was sprinkled on the altar. Lastly, blood from the altar, along with anointing oil, was then sprinkled on the garments worn by Aaron and his sons (Exodus 29:19 - 21).

24. A Hin contained about 1 U.S. gallon (3.7 liters).

25. The incense altar was located in front of the veil that separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the tabernacle in the wilderness.

[How Did Jesus Go Through the Veil?]

27. A gerah, first Biblically mentioned in Exodus 30:13, is a unit of weight that is also used for money. A gerah was the smallest weight and piece of money used in Israel. It was 1/20th of a Shekel, weighed .02 ounces (.57 grams) and was likely composed of silver.

28. Aaron and his sons were warned that failure to wash their hands and feet before they served God would cost them their life (Exodus 30:21).

29. God commanded Moses to make a special holy anointing oil (Exodus 30:23 - 24). This sacred mixture contained 500 shekels (roughly 12.5 U.S. pounds or 5.67 kilograms) each of pure myrrh and cassia, 250 shekels (6.25 U.S. pounds or 2.83 kilograms) each of sweet cinnamon and calamus (aromatic cane), and a Hin (1 U.S. gallon or 3.7 liters) of olive oil.

[What Exactly Is Frankincense?]

30. Fragrant spices such as stacte (possibly a pure kind of myrrh), onycha, galbanum and frankincense were used to create the temple's special incense. Salt was also added to the mixture.
